<p><p style="text-align: justify;">I recently participated in the UE4 winter game jam. The theme was “All is fair in love and war”. The team was composed by <a href="https://thebirdpuncher.itch.io/">Jacob</a> (Game Design + Programming), <a href="https://www.soundsbydane.com">Dane</a> (Sound Design), <a href="alessandrofama.de">Alex</a> (Music Creation), <a href="https://www.artstation.com/artvo/profile">Arturo</a> (Character Artist) and myself as a 3D Environment Artist. We decided to develop a 2-player shared screen game experience that would imply some sabotaging between the players.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">However, this game jam was only 5 days and we didn’t agree on a subject until the 2nd day. That\&#8217;s why I decided to go for a low poly cartoony style. I used Maya to model and Unwrap, and Photoshop and Substance Painter to develop the textures. Overall though, I tried to keep it simple. Cel-Shading was included in UE4 to help give a cohesive feeling.</p>

<p><p style="text-align: justify;">This Game Jam was my first time working with a version control software (we used <a href="https://gitlab.com/">Gitlab</a>) and I had to implement some of the models more than once due to synchronizing issues. However, it was a pretty fun experience.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I also tried to develop some animations for the character using some of the knowledge I gathered in my 3D animation high certificate course back in Barcelona. Although I managed to rig and animate some keyframes for Idle, Walking, Graping and Throwing, I didn’t achieve to export it in a successful way for implementation in UE4. This is something I will need to keep practicing to find the best pipeline.</p>

<p><p>I spent the 2018’s ending working on the <a href="https://itch.io/jam/virtus-winter-jam" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Virtus Winter Game Jam</a>. It was my first experience in a game jam (outside of university) and I had the chance to participate with <a href="https://itch.io/profile/lewis-fiford" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lewis Fiford</a> ideas\&#8217; of a strategy game inspired in Risk and Catan. My contribution was based mainly in the 3D art, although I also helped out with some 2D icons.</p>
<p>The game got<strong> 2<sup>nd</sup> </strong>in the <a href="https://itch.io/jam/virtus-winter-jam/results/overall-game" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Overall Game” category</a> which makes me quite happy.</p>
<p>We decided to title the game “<a href="https://lewis-fiford.itch.io/army-geddon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Army-Geddon</a>” as it was fitting both the game and the theme.</p>
<p>This game jam was a good opportunity to start figuring my way out in Substance Painter, tool that I recently purchased taking advantage of the <a href="https://www.allegorithmic.com/blog/monster-discounts-black-friday-cyber-monday" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Black Friday week discount</a>.</p>
<p>In terms of modelling I developed some low poly assets (city debris &#038; trees) for when the player would zoom-in the map and the wood frame where the map stands.</p>
<p>I then texturized the wood frame around the map and also the map itself (which was given as a mesh) by using different layers including normal and height map. It was a really good practice to get familiar with the substance painter interface and the painting and blending tools as good as the exporting to UE4 pipeline.</p>
<p>I also developed the 2D assets (icons) for the HUD and the map.</p>

<p><p style="text-align: justify;">For the antagonist I decided to play with the idea of the abdominal tablet for the chocolate bar. I also made him look intimidating with a sort of a bully air with buffy arms. I didn\&#8217;t do any concept for this, I had in mind what I wanted so I developed it in Maya straight forward.</p>

<p><p style="text-align: justify;">For the main character <a href="https://www.claudiweather.com/portfolio-item/game-jam-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claudiweather</a> helped us with some concepting despite being in another course. She based herself on the &#8220;dumb ways to die&#8221; characters.</p>

Regretfully I didn\&#8217;t have time to animate so we couldn\&#8217;t integrate the characters nor the camera effect on time. Nevertheless it was very fun!</div>
